Seaway, Southend
…
PLACE has developed a landscape scheme for the Seaway development in Southend, Essex. Situated just behind the seafront promenade near the town’s famous pier, Seaway creates an attractive and sustainable desitination for leisure and recreation.
The development comprises of leisure facilities including restaurants, a cinema, bowling and a hotel along with two new areas of high quality public space in the form of Chancellor Green and St John’s Square. Chancellor Green provides an informal open green space with a mix of existing and proposed trees. In contrast, overlooked by St John’s church, the square is a formal space with restaurant spill-out, lawn, an art wall, feature paving and rain gardens.
A new shared use cycle and pedestrian route has also been created through the site and ties into a wider wayfinding strategy to help guide people to the site. A key part of this route was created through the centre of the main car park, with an avenue of trees and feature lighting guiding uses from the seafront into the heart of the development.
