Rydens Enterprise School - Surrey

Built on existing playing fields, the landscape around Rydens Enterprise School responds to the architectural form and spaces created by architects Scott Brownrigg for the masterplan of the site. The landscape concept provides a diverse range of spaces, from the provision of a welcoming piazza at the front of the school, where pupils congregate and socialise at the start of the school day, through to spaces within the school for active and passive play.

A hard landscape treatment links the west facing entrance piazza with the southern entrance to the school. Bench seating in the piazza provides informal meeting areas. Linked to the seating pattern is a group of trees planted to provide a vertical emphasis to the space and a focal point of entry to the school.

On the southern side of the school, exterior courtyards feature mounded areas, offering seating areas and dappled shade from central trees. This area is separated from the open lawn to the south by an east-west link path, which also serves as the fire escape route. On the eastern side of the building, a mounded landscape area provides a landscaped oasis framed by the playground's hard finishes. The project also features extensive sports provision through the use of natural and artificial surfaces.
