Great Eastern Quays - London

Situated in the historic Royal Docks, GEQ is part of the regeneration of the Royal Albert Wharf.

Royal Albert Wharf is a residentially led mixed use development by Notting Hill Housing Group.  It is situated within the Royal Docks, Newham and made up of some 350 residential units plus some office, retail, cafe and other uses.

PLACE were commissioned to design and develop the soft landscape of this site, including the communal podiums and play areas.

The site has strong relationship both to the Royal Albert Basin and to the River Thames which creates a distinctive waterfront setting and sense of place for the development.  This has been emphasised in the planning of the site with the dockside heritage respected and most of the dockside opened up for public enjoyment.  Significant areas of public open space have also been included throughout the development.

The podium courtyards on Blocks A and B are communal gardens for the use of adjacent residents and provide planting, play areas for small children and amenity space with seating.

Substantial planting has been provided throughout the site.  Species have been chosen to provide seasonal colour and interest, to help identify the different areas and contribute to wildlife value.

Wildlife and biodiversity is further encouraged by the provision of brown and green roofs on the buildings specifically designed to enhance biodiversity without human interference.  These roofs will also enhance views from the surrounding blocks.
