Box Hill - Surrey

The National Trust visitors centre sits at the crest of Box Hill. The surrounding countryside has always been popular with visitors but the London Olympics 2012 saw the slopes flooded with spectators, as the hill became the focus of the cycling road race. Since the Olympics the number of visitors to this beauty spot has greatly increased, with more people on their bikes reliving the Olympic legacy.

In the lead up to the London Olympics the National Trust was looking for a landscape architect to assess the visitor facilities in expectation of increased visitor numbers. The practice was able to develop a series of strategies for the short and long term. Stage one of these improvements was implemented a few months before the summer of 2012 and involved improved access routes, combined cycle storage and seating for resting cyclists, an integrated recycling centre, a sustainable drainage surface and overall improved visitor orientation.
