Barnwell Gate, Cambridge
PLACE produced a landscape design for this student accommodation complex in Cambridge. The scheme contains 193 study bedrooms with communal areas and facilities for students.
The landscape design comprises of an enhanced streetscape and a central multi-use courtyard space. The streetscape design creates a feature at the main building entrance with street tree planting forming a continuation of the avenue along Newmarket Road. The courtyard design maximises the available space with a large multi-use space for recreation, leisure, movement and vehicular access. Desire lines determine the arrangement of footpaths and a green buffer of defensible planting provides separation to the ground floor bedrooms. Smaller, quieter spaces for leisure and study are formed where the available space narrows with views out to a local green space.
